Fall Greetings!

Saluki Fans and Alumni!

- This is an exciting time to be a Saluki! Our Football Team is ranked #1 in the Division I-AA Football Championship Subdivision! Thus, there is a very good chance that we will see McAndrew Stadium on ESPN in high-def one more time before the stadium is officially retired! The decision will depend on our ranking at the end of the season and where we are seated for the playoffs.

The final regular season football games are: (1) Sat., Nov. 14 vs. Missouri State in Carbondale, at 3:00 p.m. EST and, (2) Sat., Nov. 21 at Southeast Missouri State Cape Girardeau, Mo. at 2:00 p.m. EST.

- This is also the first week of the Basketball Season and SIU has an exciting new team filled with an remarkable amount of talent! So standby for information regarding local watch parties in the near future! If anyone would like to sponsor a watch party, just let me know!

The first regular season basketball game is this Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, in Carbondale against Tennessee-Martin at 8:05 p.m. EST.

- For those of you who have not been to Carbondale for some time, you can watch the construction of Saluki Way from your home computer by pasting the link below into your web browser:

- Thank you to all who attended our Fall Picnic in September! We had perfect weather, great food, and good discussions! The SIU Alumni Executive Director, Michelle Suarez, and the Director of Off-Campus Events and Chapter Development, Zach Sapienza, were in attendance. They provided us with a detailed update on the forward progress of SIU and initiatives to support SIU Alumni Clubs and Chapters! Also I would like to offer a special thanks to our guest speaker, Ms. Karla Horn, for sharing her experience at the Pentagon with us and to the publishers of Saluki Illustrated Magazine for providing us with complimentary editions.
Pictures of the event are posted on our SIU Alumni Website at www.siualumni.com (click on Alumni: Chapters, Clubs, and Groups; Scroll down to the end of the list and click on the Washington D.C. - Baltimore link) or simply click on this link: Webpage

For those of you interested in subscribing to Saluki Illustrated, you can go to: http://www.salukiillustrated.com/

- Finally, our club is growing at an amazing rate! I believe that this year we will able to elect a board of officers and establish our official chapter. If you are interested in serving on our board, let me know!

I will be in contact with you soon with a list of future watch parties!! Go Salukis!!!

Looking for Suggestions...

Penn Quarter has been very hospitable to our events and we are very grateful. However, I do understand that for many of us, getting to downtown D.C. can be a challenge. I live 72 miles north of the Beltway in Forest Hill, Maryland, so I allot myself 2 hours to get down there and 2 hours to get back. With long work weeks, and a 3 year old and a 1 year old at home competing for my attention, spending 7 hours away from the house on a weekend to watch a two hour game, does not always make me the most popular person at home. So for those of you who have not been able to make it to the watch parties…I definitely understand.

Therefore, I am soliciting feedback for other locations and events, North and South of the Beltway to host SIU events. My vote for instance, would be the Columbia area since it is located halfway between D.C. and Baltimore. I would also be willing to host an event North of Baltimore in Bel Air, Maryland or South of D.C. in Virginia.

I just need to hear back from you to so I have a better understanding of:

1. How far you are willing to drive to an Alumni Event
2. Type of locations you prefer (Pub, Restaurant, Hotel Ball Room, Home)
3. Type of event you prefer (SIU Watch Parties, Social Events with Key Speakers, Formal Dinner, Theatrical Events, Tours, Block of Seats Reserved at Professional Sporting Events, Etc.)
4. Expectations of a Baltimore/Washington SIU Alumni Club/Chapter

Thanks and best wishes for 2009,

Big Hopes for the New Year!

Happy New Year Everyone! I wish you and yours a great and prosperous 2009!

This year I would like to see us move from a Club status to an Official Chapter with a board of officers. The responsibility for Chapter Officers is not a heavy load. A board of officers must meet once a year and host a couple events in a 12 months period. The petition for official Chapter Status is also not difficult, we simply need to submit a signed list of 20 signatures, and then complete some paperwork, so I certainly believe establishing an official chapter is achievable. (I will send a separate email on the details, requirements, and the way ahead for us to reach a Chapter Status)

Based on your feedback from this email, I plan to host an official formal SIU Alumni Event this spring, with Key Speakers and other family oriented events to launch our bid for a Chapter. That being said, I am an Army Officer continually sent around the globe on a moments notice, so I will require some help from future Chapter officers. So for any of you, who seek a greater role in the SIU Alumni Association during this exciting time of the University’s growth and success, I would challenge you to help give the University a larger footprint in our Nation’s Capital by helping to establish this Chapter.

Congratulations to those of you who attended the SIU vs. Northwestern Football Watch Party! You made the Southern Alumni Quarterly Magazine!! Our picture has become very famous! Unfortunately, no one is paying royalties :)

Finally, I would like to remind you of our Websites below, where you can receive information on Club and University activities:
